Pentax Introduces a Second DIL Camera

Last year's Pentax Q digital interchangeable lens camera was only the beginning for this company in the DIL market.

Today, Pentax has announced a second DIL camera, the Pentax K-01.

The K-01 isn't quite as small as the Q, which I reviewed recently, but it still looks like a very interesting camera, especially because it can accept any Pentax K lens. As far as I can decipher, this is the first DIL camera that can accept lenses originally made for DSLR cameras.

Canon updates EOS Utility for Mac

Canon USA has posted EOS Utility 2.10.4 for Mac. The only stated change is compatibility with OS X 10.6.8 and 10.7.x.

NPPA attorney comments on police obstruction of photographers

The war on terrorism has become the war on photography, says National Press Photographers Association general counsel Mickey Osterreicher, as quoted on the web site of the (U.S.) National Press Club. In a presentation to Press Club members, Osterreicher detailed what he says is increasing repression and obstruction of photographers, both amateur and professinal, by police in the U.S. using what he refers to as a "catch-and-release" program.

Olympus Dealing With Financial Problems

On the heels of Kodak filing for bankruptcy, digital camera manufacturer Olympus is having its own financial problems.

Olympus is having problems with cash flow, and the company admitted to accounting irregularities late in 2011. The stock has lost more than half of its value, and some stockholders are filing suits against Olympus in Japan. The Tokyo Stock Exchange considered de-listing Olympus, but allowed the company to keep its listing after paying a fine.

Review: Delock Card Reader FireWire B (Nr. 91694)

Over the last year or so, the supply of FireWire-equipped CompactFlash card readers has almost completely dried up, despite the fact that, for many photographers who use Macs, FireWire is their computer's only peripheral port that's fast enough to allow for efficient offloading of pictures. That's the bad news. The good news is that a new FireWire 800 CompactFlash card reader has arrived on the scene, one that provides true FireWire 800 speeds, a compact design and excellent compatibility with all but certain older cards. Called the Delock Card Reader FireWire B (Nr. 91694), it nicely fills the opening left by the demise of all earlier FireWire readers. If you're a Mac user in particular it may carry you through until native USB 3.0 ports begin popping up on Apple's products.
